Export of Horse Meat to the European Union

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) received a letter from the European Commission on September 28, 2016, advising Canada that the EU is implementing six months residency requirements for horses imported into Canada.

According to new requirements, horses will required to be resident of Canada for six months prior to slaughter for export of horse meat to the EU. The new certificate requiring six month residency in Canada will be effective as of February 28, 2017.
