Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)

Of particular interest to members, the CUSMA, or new-NAFTA, includes Chapter 5, Origin Procedures. This chapter refers to “certification of origin”, rather than formal Certificates of Origin, very much in line with other recent new trade agreements.

Also of interest is Chapter 7, Customs Administration and Trade Facilitation.  This chapter includes new amounts upon which duty and/or taxes will be collected.

More information on the administration of these chapters will be made available to members once CSCB completes its discussions with CBSA.

Other changes will be made in the areas of state-to-state dispute settlement, labour, environment, intellectual property and rules of origin. The implementation of the new Agreement will reinforce the strong economic ties between the three countries and enhance North American competitiveness globally. Global Affairs Canada’s website provides a list of these changes and more specific information is available in the text of the Agreement.

Questions can be directed to Michelle Criger at the CSCB.
