Business Barometer: Small business confidence dips slightly in March

Small business owners are ending March with a slightly less optimistic tone. CFIB's Business Barometer® Index is closing off the month at 64.1, a barely perceptible 0.3 decline from February levels and very close to its January mark. So far, business operating conditions in 2014 have been stable but not overly robust.

Economy grows more than expected in January

The Canadian economy grew by a better-than-expected 0.5 per cent in January, rebounding from December's weather-induced shrinkage.

Many economists were expecting to see growth of between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent, even though January had a few of its own nasty weather surprises. GDP fell 0.5 per cent in December.

Transport Canada Transfers Sarnia Port Facility to the City of Sarnia

[On March 28], the Government of Canada officially announced the transfer of the Sarnia Port Facility to the City of Sarnia. The transfer agreement includes a contribution of over $8.5 million from the Government of Canada to cover operational costs and maintain the Port’s infrastructure.

Softwood Lumber Tribunal Ruling

“Today, the London Court of International Arbitration has ruled in favour of Canada on a dispute over the termination date of export charges related to a 2011 ruling under the Softwood Lumber Agreement between Canada and the United States...
