EDC Export Performance Monitor - August 2016

Canadian exports made a slight reversal from their recent downward trend with 6 of 11 product categories increasing in nominal terms in June. Posting the largest increases were energy and industrial products, with much of the increase on the back of prices as total export volumes were actually down 1.4%.

On a more positive note, although exports to the US were down 1.2%, exports to countries outside the US were up 6.9% in June. For the year exports to Japan and Germany have been particularly strong. In June exports to the UK were up by over 30%.

With half the year accounted for total exports are somewhat lower than 2015, down 1.8% year to date. But a downward trend in energy product exports as compared to last year is hiding the fact that exports of automotive products are up 21.5% and exports of consumer goods are up 13.4% in 2016.
