Export of Horse Meat to the European Union
Please be advised that new certification requirements for the export of horse meat to the European Union (EU) are effective March 1, 2017. This notification is further to the previous message sent in September 2016.
To meet the new certification requirements, horses are required to be resident of Canada for six months prior to slaughter in order to be eligible for export as horse meat to the EU. The CFIA will only provide certificates for the export of horse meat to the EU that meet the EU’s new six month residency requirement. This new requirement does not impact food safety.
