CN 14-005 - Harmonized System Codes for Export Declarations

1. This notice is to remind exporters of their obligation to correctly report the Harmonized System (HS) Code when completing their export declarations. Customs Act, Sub-Section 95(4) states: If goods are required to be reported in writing, they shall be reported in the prescribed form containing the prescribed information or in such form containing such information as is satisfactory to the Minister.

2. Under the Reporting of Exported Goods Regulations, exporters of restricted goods are required to:

    (a)  Report the exportation as referred to in Section 3 or 4 of the Regulations;
    (b)  Provide evidence that the exportation of the goods complies with the Act of Parliament under which the exportation of the goods is restricted.

3. To assist exporters with the correct classification for the Canadian Export HS codes, information may be obtained from Statistics Canada by:

    (a)  Reviewing the 2014 Canadian Export Classification catalogue; or
    (b)  Contacting Statistics Canada via e-mail at export@statcan.gc.ca. (Please ensure to write “SC-HS request” in the subject field of your email and provide details of the commodity for which you require HS code guidance.)
