The TPP Agreement: A Canadian Business Perspective

On October 5th 2015, twelve Pacific Rim countries (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the USA, Vietnam) concluded nearly eight-year long negotiations on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement ("TPP"). It is said to be the largest regional trade agreement ("RTA") in history, constituting 40% of the world's GDP.

Forget NAFTA, the TPP is the new ‘gold standard’ of global trade

It will take years before the benefits of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and its possible drawbacks, find their way into the Canadian economy.

One thing for sure is that much of what we gained from the North American Free Trade Agreement [NAFTA], which came into effect in 1995, will be superseded by the new 12-nation TPP — whenever member nations finally sign off on the pact.

I was dismayed to hear pundits and political candidates claim that, because 85 per cent of our exports are covered under the NAFTA and other trade bilateral agreements, we really don’t need to be part of the TPP anyway.

Trade deficit balloons to $2.5 billion in August

Statistics Canada says the country's trade deficit with the world increased to $2.5 billion in August — much higher than economists expected.
