Business Barometer: Small business optimism edged up in January

Small business optimism edged up in January, but not nearly enough to counter the steep dive it had taken the month before. CFIB’s Business Barometer® Index rose two-and-a-half points to 56.1 to open 2019, but it remains about five points below readings taken in the fall of 2018—which themselves were weak by historical norms. Healthy index levels should be 65 or above.
