Canada announces new sanctions against Syrian leadership

On April 14, 2017, the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced new sanctions against the Assad regime. Canada’s Special Economic Measures (Syria) Regulations have been amended to list 27 additional individuals who are now subject to an asset freeze and dealings prohibition.

On April 20, 2017, the minister announced that Canada’s Special Economic Measures (Syria) Regulations have been further amended to list additional individuals and entities subject to an asset freeze and dealings prohibition. These sanctions affect 17 high-ranking individuals in the Assad regime and five entities linked to the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
