Information from Health Canada regarding the Tents Regulations and CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020

Health Canada wishes to inform you that CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020, Flammability and labelling requirements for tents has been finalized and is now available on the Government of Canada Publications website at the following links:
- English version: http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2020/ongc-cgsb/P29-182-001-2020-eng.pdf
- French version: http://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2020/ongc-cgsb/P29-182-001-2020-fra.pdf

Please be advised that for the present time, the existing requirements set out in the Tents Regulations under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act remain in effect for tents manufactured, imported, advertised or sold in Canada. Health Canada is currently working on a proposal to replace the existing requirements under the Tents Regulations with the requirements in CAN/CGSB-182.1 as per the Notice to interested parties – Proposal to amend the Tents Regulations, including consequential amendments to the Toys Regulations. Consequential amendments to the Toys Regulations would be required so that flammability protections for toys that are play tents can be included in those regulations. Compliance with CAN/CGSB-182.1 will be voluntary for tents until the Tents Regulations and Toys Regulations are amended. However, it is expected that tents that comply with the current flammability requirements under the Tents Regulations will also comply with the flammability requirements in CAN/CGSB-182.1.

As a subscriber to email updates about the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, you will be notified when the proposed amendments to the Tents Regulations and Toys Regulations are pre-published for public comment in the Canada Gazette, Part I.

For further information regarding the requirements for tents, contact a Health Canada Consumer Product Safety Office via email (hc.ccpsa-lcspc.sc@canada.ca) or telephone at 1-866-662-0666 (toll-free within Canada and the United States).
